This striking map shows the island of Macao at the entrance to the Canton River, which flows inland to the port city of Canton. A compass rose with radiating rhumb lines is placed near the island of Lintem to aid mariners approaching the coast from offshore, and many soundings and anchorages are included as well. The map was drawn under the direction of Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), the Royal Hydrographer to the King in Paris and Director of the Depot de la Marine, and published in the scarce German edition of Prevost's Histoire Generale des Voyages.
