A beautifully engraved map of the continent that is noteworthy for the complete lack of interior detail except in New South Wales and Victoria. In South Australia a track of land is labeled Torrens Basin and Stony Desert. The counties of each state are named in tables with information on their discovery. The Great Barrier Reef is shown off Australia's northeast coast with Horse Shoe Shoal located offshore. The map features fine original hand coloring and Colton's distinctive scroll-style border. Dated 1855, this map was published in the first edition of Colton's monumental world atlas. The Colton family of publishers founded their business in New York in 1831. Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893) started the business & he was succeeded by his son George Woolworth Colton, who took over the publishing business upon his father's retirement.
