This copper engraving is from Calmet's encyclopedic dictionary on all aspects of the history, geography, and culture of the Bible and Biblical times. The bird's-eye view depicts the ancient harbor city of Ptolemais in Phoenicia, showing the elaborate system of fortifications. Two galley ships are shown in the foreground. Ptolemais is now known as Acre, one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in Israel.
