This is a very unique Boer War souvenir handkerchief map of the Transvaal and Orange State in today's South Africa. The map shows roads, railroads and rivers. The cities of Pretoria, Mafeking, Kimber, Bloemeontein, Ladysmith and Pietermaritzburg are highlighted with circles made of red thread. Surrounding the map are portraits of Queen Victoria and Lord Roberts. Rudyard Kipling's poem "The Absent Minded Beggar" appears at left accompanied by Sullivan's music. The poem and song were used to raise money to support British soldiers and their families during the second Boer War, which lasted from 1899-1902 and required significant British troops and resources. Printed in London by the Daily Mail Publishing Co, Ltd.
