This is the 4th edition, published in Brussels, of this classic work first published in 1835. This book represents Alexis de Tocqueville's observation on American society and the effect of democracy on its people. The book is illustrated with a map of the United States which shows the routes of De Tocqueville's travels in America entitled Carte Des Etats-Unis d'Amerique (12.3x 14.8"). The map shows basic detail of the eastern half of the country with early railroads, canals and topography depicted. De Tocqueville's routes are shown in outline color. Three volumes: Volume 1 (332 pp.), Volume 2 (275 pp.), and Volume 3 (318 pp.). Hardbound in maroon cloth boards with gilt title and "Glasgow College Library" stamp on spine.
