This lovely bird's-eye view of Mexico City depicts the center of the city as a large island in a lake surrounded by smaller islands with houses and fortifications and bridges. The view is based on Cortes' map of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City), which first appeared in 1524. The majority of the maps for Bertius' geographical treatise were engraved by Jodocus Hondius Jr. after Mercator. French text on verso.
