This rare, detailed railroad survey report and map was prepared by A.C. Twining for potential railroad investors and other interested parties. The 36.64 mile Hartford and New-Haven Rail-Road was completed in 1839. Hartford and New Haven served as co-capitals of Connecticut from 1701 to 1873, thus making this one of Connecticut's first necessary railroads. The 30 pages of text contain interesting details of early American railroads such as the cost of a locomotive and tender ($6,500), cost of a depot ($7,500), and cost per mile of track (over $22,000). The preface notes that 800 copies of this report were to be printed. The accompanying map is an outline map with an elevation profile of the route. Octavo with blue paper covers.

Condition: A

The map, printed on very light tissue paper, is clean and bright with some misfolds. Paper covers are lightly soiled, chipped along the fore-edge, and the spine has been reinforced with archival tape. Internally clean.
