Ortelius based this map of Tuscany on a map by Stefano Buonsignori, engraved by Domenico Vito in 1584. Centered on Florence, this map depicts the towns, mountains, and rivers of the Tuscany region, and extends east to the Adriatic Sea. Florence, Siena, Pisa, and several other large cities are illustrated with miniature views. The map is adorned with three large galleons, a strapwork cartouche featuring the head of a monkey, and the coast of arms of the Medici family, a political dynasty from the 15th to 18th centuries in Tuscany. Latin text on verso.
