The Republic of Texas was a sovereign state in North America from 1836 to 1845. It was formed as a break-away republic from Mexico by the Texas Revolution. The nation claimed a large region that included all of the present state of Texas together with part of the former Mexican region of New Mexico (parts of present-day New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming). The eastern boundary with the United States was defined by the Adams-Onís Treaty between the United States and Spain, in 1819. Its southern and western-most boundary with Mexico was under dispute throughout the existence of the republic, with Texas claiming that the boundary was the Rio Grande, and Mexico claiming the Nueces River as the boundary.

This map comes from Niles and Pease's History of South America and Mexico; comprising their Discovery, Geography, Politics, Commerce and Revolutions. While the title may not suggest it, the book contains an excellent account of the Texas Revolution. According to Streeter, "I am inclined to think the value of this contemporary account of the Texas Revolution, compiled by the father of one of the participants, buried as it were in a rather bulky volume on South America, has been overlooked" (the book is not included in this lot).

The map itself shows the newly formed Republic of Texas and the internal provinces of Mexico. Texas is in a large configuration with settlement limited to the east including San Felipe de Austin, San Antonio, Columbia and Washington. Several overland routes are depicted including the "Great Spanish Road to Red R." and routes from Natchitoches and Opelousas, Louisiana to the interior of Mexico. An important and desirable map for a Texas collector.
