This beautifully engraved map depicts the Italian peninsula and its surroundings. Topographical detail, pre-Roman political divisions, cities, and rivers are shown. Corsica and Sardinia appear with plenty of place names. The striking title cartouche features the Roman emperor standing triumphant over conquered kings and the trumpeting angel of France. Christoph Cellarius was a German classics scholar and is noted for popularizing the Ancient-Medieval-Modern division of history. His atlases were enormously popular and were issued in various editions until the early 19th century.
