This copper engraving depicts a scene just off the shore of one of the Mariana Islands, then called the "Islas de los Ladrones" (Islands of the Thieves). It shows natives as they take their canoes out to meet the arriving Europeans. The engraving is surrounded by an elaborate picture-frame border separate from the plate, as is typical for engravings from La Galerie Agreable du Monde, van der Aa's magnum opus. The work was issued in 66 parts containing over 3000 maps, town plans, and topographic prints. It was the largest picture and map book ever published. Views from La Galerie Agreable du Monde are rarely seen on the market, as only 100 copies of the 66 volumes of this incredible atlas were produced. All edges gilt.
