This is the first edition, second issue, of Mitchell’s famous school atlas including 9 single-page and 4 double-page maps (missing only the world projection map), along with tables and statistics. All of the maps are dated 1839 with the exception of Great Britain and Germany. The Republic of Texas is depicted in its smaller configuration following the Nueces River and can be seen on both the United States and North America maps. The double-page map of the United States features the large Oregon Territory filling the Northwest, shows Mexico in control of the Southwest and locates a large area in Texas labeled "Herds of Buffaloes and Wild Horses." Hardbound with pictorial paper over boards.
References: cf. Rumsey #523.
Condition: B
The maps, in original color, have light soiling and occasional foxing which is more prevalent in the blank margins. The United States map has a short 1" fold separation at bottom, and there are pencil notations in the image of the Europe map. Covers are very good with bumped edges and several small faint damp stains.
