This map features California as an island. It is very similar to Sanson's other small maps of North America, except the northern shore of California is more indented, but still sloping up toward the east. All five Great Lakes are shown but still misshapen and opened to the west. The Mississippi River has numerous tributaries, but barely rises above Spanish Florida with no obvious origin. The R. de Nort drains into the Gulf of California from a large interior lake in the country of Los Apaches. There are many place names within Nouveau Mexique including Quivira, Santa Fe, and Grenade. The British colonies are shown simply as Nouvelle Angleterre and Virginie. This is a smaller edition of Sanson's quarto-sized map of America, published in Zacharias Chatelain's multi-volume La Science des Personnes de Cour....
