Following the War of 1812, the British feared that the Americans would attempt to control the St. Lawrence River and effectively cut off Montreal from the British naval station at Kingston. In 1832, they completed the Rideau Canal linking Ottawa with Kingston, effectively eliminating this concern. While its original purpose was military in nature, it served commercial interests as well. It is the oldest continuously operating canal in North America.

This rare, small map shows the proposed canal highlighted in red linking the Ottawa River with Lake Ontario. Several place names are located along this route and the St. Lawrence River, but there is no inland detail. Ottawa is not named on the map where the canal begins, but McNab is shown. There have been no auction results or dealer listings in the last 30 years. Not in OCLC.
