A. Delaware and Maryland, by J.H. Colton & Co., dated 1855 (16.1 x 11.9"). This is a detailed map of Delaware and Maryland that includes the northern part of Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, and the Atlantic. The map displays counties in various colors and delineates roads, cities, towns, ports and watersheds. At lower left is an inset of the District of Columbia with 12 locations identified on the grid plan and statistics on the populations of whites, freed blacks, and slaves in the area. A note on the Mason-Dixon line appears at bottom. Condition: There is light scattered foxing, minor show-through of text on verso, and faint soiling.
B. Johnson's Delaware and Maryland, by Johnson and Ward, published 1864 (16.2 x 12.8"). This is an updated version of the above map with a number of additions made to the D.C. inset, including Uniontown, an asylum, and several newly established forts that were part of the capital's defenses during the Civil War. The map is surrounded by a beautiful strapwork border. Condition: Light scattered foxing and some chips and edge tears, one of which enters the border at top. There is toning confined to the blank margins.
