This is a wonderful piece of map-related ephemera taken from the August 3rd, 1807 issue of the National Intelligencer. It includes a full column advertisement (2.2 x 17.8") on the back cover announcing "Proposals by Conrad, Lucas & Co...for Publishing Lewis and Clark's Tour to the Pacific Ocean, Through the Interior of the Continent of North America..." The bottom of the advertisement publicizes a separately issued map to accompany the report: "Detached from the work there will be ub shed [sic] Lewis & Clark's Map of North America" at a price of $10 and measuring 5 feet 8 inches by 3 feet 10 inches. Of course Meriwether Lewis never completed this map, and it wasn't until 1814 when the Lewis & Clark report was commercially published.
