This pair of maps illustrates the increase in county development and the railroad network between 1839 and 1852 in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and North Carolina.

A. Map of the Middle States and Part of the Southern. Engraved to Illustrate Mitchells, School and Family Geography, by Samuel Augustus Mitchell, from Mitchell's School and Family Geography, dated 1852 (10.4 x 16.8"). Engraved by J.H. Young. Condition: A crisp, bright example with original color and one stain in the border at top. (A)
B. Map of the Middle States Designed to Accompany Smith's Geography for Schools, by Daniel Burgess, from Smith's Geography for Schools, dated 1839 (10.5 x 17.6"). Condition: Moderate soiling and toning with several edge tears, two of which touch the neatline. (B)
