This handsome map of the young state of California features early county development. The Wagon Road to Gt. Salt Lake is prominently depicted heading in the direction of Las Vegas. The state borders Utah Territory, with a large inset map showing the settlement in the Great Salt Lake region. The map reflects the configuration of counties up to at least 1857, with the new Del Norte County appearing in the northwest. A smaller inset at bottom left focuses on San Francisco Bay and Vicinity.
