This basic map depicts Xiamen (here called Amoy) and the surrounding area in Fujian province in southeastern China. During the 19th century, Xiamen was the principal Chinese port for the exportation of tea. Cities and towns are located and identified with both the Mandarin pronunciation as well as the local dialect (Hokkien). A note to the south of Wah-Foong, where the "First Tea Plantations" are located, states that the "River [is] impassable from rapids."
