This incredibly large manuscript map depicts a portion of New Brunswick from Church Street to Bishop Street, continuing along the Raritan River for several miles. On a highly detailed scale of 100 feet per inch, it shows the property acquired by the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company and its predecessor, the Delaware & Raritan Canal Company. Businesses, property owners, and building types are all identified along the stretch of the canal. Two tables show the various property transfers that occurred along this stretch of the river, beginning in the year 1831. Drawn in manuscript on thin oilcloth.
The United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company consisted of the Camden and Amboy Rail Road (the first railroad in New Jersey), the New Jersey Rail Road an the Delaware and Raritan Canal. It later became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Portions of its lines are now on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor route.
