This lot consists of two of the three sheets of this important large map of Pennsylvania. It is based on the 1770 map of the province by William Scull, which was culled heavily from his grandfather Nicholas Scull's early map of the region, originally published in 1759. Sayer and Bennett published this revised edition in both Thomas Jefferys' American Atlas and William Faden's North American Atlas.
The two sheets here cover the central and eastern portions of Pennsylvania, extending as far west as Bedford. Small parts of New Jersey and Maryland appear as well. The Mason-Dixon line, surveyed just a few years before the publication of William Scull's original map, is delineated here. There is excellent detail of the region's mountains and hills, with many ranges identified. The easternmost counties of the province are dense with place names, while Cumberland County has relatively little settlement. Early counties, rivers, roads, forts, creeks, mills, mines, churches, and more are also located. There is a Great Swamp in Northampton County, just below The Endless Mountains. A sliver of the Buffaloe Swamp that is delineated on the westernmost sheet is visible to the left of the title. If joined the map would measure approximately 38.5 x 26.8".

A nice impression and original outline color on thick, watermarked paper with light soiling mostly concentrated on the top of the eastern sheet, a small spot of ink near Philadelphia, and a few minor extraneous creases. There are some short edge tears and small chips confined to the blank margins, away from image.
