A. Landmarks of Mapmaking - An Illustrated Survey of Maps and Mapmakers, by R.V. Tooley and Charles Bricker, published 1976 (11.0 x 15.9"). Charles Bricker wrote this beautifully produced and well-illustrated cartographic reference. It covers the exploration and mapping of Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Australia. The preface is by Gerald Roe Crone, and the maps were chosen by R. V. Tooley. Comprised of 276 pp., over 350 illustrations, including maps, portraits, title pages, and reproductions from early sources, 14 color folding maps, other color illustrations, bibliography, and index. Second edition, published by Thomas Y. Crowell, 1976. Folio, hardbound in linen cloth, gilt lettering, gilt and white compass rose on front cover, pictorial end-papers, and dust jacket. Condition: Contents near fine with a touch of soiling at the far edge of a few pages. Covers are very good with just a couple spots and minor wear. There is light soiling and a number of short tears on the dust jacket. (B+)

B. Early Maps, by Tony Campbell, published 1981 (12.3 x 15.4"). This reference book contains an array of early maps, municipal plans, and sea charts from the 13th century to the 1850s. Each plate is accompanied by information on the cartographer and an explanation of the political developments and geographical discoveries that influenced the map's design. Hardbound in green cloth with gilt letters on spine and illustrated original dust-wrapper. 148 pp., 68 color plates, several foldouts. Condition: Contents and covers fine with minor soiling along the spine of the dust jacket. (A)
