This is the first complete modern English translation of this fascinating and comprehensive text covering the life, customs, folklore, and beliefs of the Swedish people. Olaus Magnus (1490-1557) was the last Catholic archbishop of Uppsala and a patriotic Swedish scholar who published Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus in Rome in 1555 to massive acclaim. The work featured 480 woodcuts and the earliest map of the Nordic countries to give details and place names (there are only two earlier maps of Scandinavia known: those of Claudius Clavus and Jacob Ziegler), all reproduced here. Edited by Peter Foote and published by the Hakluyt Society. Hardbound in blue cloth with gilt titles on the spines and gilt ships on the front covers, as well as dust jackets. 1340 pp. over 3 volumes.
