This small map was issued in Joseph Warren Revere's A Tour of Duty in California; Including a Description of the Gold Region..., which was a detailed and important account of the Gold Rush. Revere was a grandson of Paul Revere, a graduate of Annapolis, and a lieutenant in the Navy at the time. The map, which was the only one issued in the book, emphasizes navigational information including locating numerous soundings, anchorages and shoals in San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay and Suisun Bay. A note in the San Francisco Bay indicates "The part inside of the dotted lines interspersed with Oyster beds dry at low water." In additional to the navigational information, the map also identifies missions, ranches and wagon roads.
