These two volumes offer over 250 years of history of California and the Northwest Coast of the United States. Interspersed throughout the text are numerous maps depicting explorers' routes and reduced-size reproductions of historical maps. These volumes were compiled by Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832–1918), an American historian who published works primarily concerning the western United States, Mexico and Central America. The interiors are clean with very light toning. The covers show light wear and are loose with the spines nearly separated from the text block. The back cover of the California volume is detached.
