This lot includes four volumes related to colonial activity in the Americas in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, all published by the Hakluyt Society, an organization founded in 1846 to publish primary narratives of various expeditions. The first book, Further English Voyages to Spanish America 1583-1594... (314 pp.), features 100 documents spanning an 11 year period, all focused on the English voyages to the Caribbean, the Spanish Main, Florida, and Virginia. Edited by Irene A. Wright, it includes an extensive introduction and 8 maps, among them a facsimile of Boazio's chart tracking Drake's voyage. The second book is a reprint of William Strachey's 1612 work The Historie of Travell into Virginia Britania (221 pp.), an incomplete attempt by the author to "compose a narrative of exploration and settlement in Virginia in the manner of Hakluyt" (per the introduction). Strachey's account went unpublished in his lifetime; it was first published by the Hakluyt Society in 1849. This is an updated edition, based on the Princeton manuscript of the text. Edited by Louis B. Wright and Virginia Freund with 3 maps and an illustration. The final two volumes in the lot, The Roanoke Voyages 1584-1590... (1004 pp. over 2 volumes), include documents related to Sir Walter Raleigh's explorations in the New World, including texts from Hakluyt's Principall Navigations (1589), Reverend James A. Geary's study of the languages of the Algonquin tribes, a chapter on the archaeological findings at the Roanoke settlements, and more. Edited by David Beers Quinn with 8 maps and 4 illustrations across 2 volumes. All four volumes are hardbound in blue cloth with gilt titles on the spines and gilt ships on the front covers.
