This attractive map of the region shows county development current to 1833 with Rappahannock from Culpepper County in Virginia (1833) but prior to Marshall being organized from Ohio County in the present-day panhandle of West Virginia (1835). The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal is shown extending west to Cumberland along the Potomac River, and an early railroad reaches as far west as Harper's Ferry and Winchester. Topography, rivers, towns and settlements are depicted as well as completed railroads and canals and proposed railroads.
