This lovely small map of Portugal is oriented with north to the right and richly adorned with a strapwork cartouche, a large coat of arms, a sailing ship, and a very devilish-looking sea monster. The map is a reduced-size version of Abraham Ortelius' map, which in turn was based on Fernando Alvarez Secco's map of 1560. As in Ortelius' edition, this map includes a dedication to Cardinal Camerlengo, Guido Ascanius Sfortia, from Secco that enumerates the great achievements of Portugal. Published by J. Bussemacher and engraved by H. Nagel. German text on verso.

Condition: A
Excellent impression and color on watermarked paper with minor show-through of text on verso and light toning along the edges of the sheet. There is some marginal soiling and two small holes in blank margins, far from image.
