This nautical world map, originally engraved by Girolamo Porro, was one of two world maps included in Tomaso Porcacchi's popular pocket-sized atlas, first published in 1572. It covers most of the world, excluding far eastern Asia and the western coast of North America; thus alluding to a connection between the two. The Terra Incognita landmass dominates the bottom of the map. The handsome map is filled with rhumb lines and the seas are fully stippled. Lasor a Varea, whose real name was Raffaello Savonarola, published a two-volume scriptural and historical dictionary that included nearly 500 maps. The maps were taken from old plates, many of which were more than a century old, and often reworked. On a partial sheet of Latin text measuring 7.6 x 8.0".
