This is a depiction of British General John Oglethorpe's first unsuccessful expedition against the Spanish at St. Augustine. The bird's-eye view depicts the Matanza River, the castle, the North and South Channel, and warships in the foreground. A lengthy key and explanatory notes fill the bottom third of map. General Oglethorpe was the founder of the American colony of Georgia, which was situated as a buffer colony between Spanish Florida and South Carolina. Size includes the key and text. Issued folding on watermarked paper, now flattened. A binding trim at bottom right has been replaced with old paper and an adjacent 1/4" binding tear has been professionally repaired. Remargined at top and left also with old paper.
