This rare map is centered on Africa, and extends to include Brazil, Arabia, and Southern Asia. There is excellent detail of the islands in the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The map was designed to show the route of Portuguese Jesuit missionaries on the ships S. Pedro de Alcantara and Madre de Deos sailing from Lisbon, around the Cape of Good Hope, to Goa, India from April 1736 through September 1737. Detail on land is confined to the coasts with hundreds of place names. The map is adorned with two large compass roses and a coat of arms. Engraved by Johann Jacob Lidl. Published in Joseph Stoecklein's 5-volume work on the Jesuit missionaries.
