This is an uncommon little map of North America showing a large island of California with a flat northern coastline. The Rio Grande is shown flowing incorrectly into the Gulf of California, rather than the Gulf of Mexico. All five Great Lakes are shown but are still misshapen, and Erie is not yet named. The title cartouche in the upper left shows a kneeling native offering goods to a standing European. This re-engraved edition lacks an engraver's imprint and was published in Paul Marret's Nouvelle Relation, Contenent les Voyages de Thomas Gage, a French translation of the account of Gage in the West Indies, first published in 1648.
