This early map of Dakota Territory extends north to the junction of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers, but development is confined to the far southeast corner of the territory. Thirteen counties are named and delineated as well as the 100,000 acre "Yankton Reserve." Three of the counties have yet to begin surveying. This map is from the first year that large colored state maps were issued by the GLO.
