This splendid map of the Isthmus of Panama and northwestern South America includes most of present day Colombia and part of Venezuela. The mountainous topography and numerous settlements and towns are noted. This map is a reduced-size version of Jodocus Hondius' map of the region, which was based on the cartography of Hessel Gerritsz and formed one of the prototypes for South American cartography throughout the rest of the century. Two cartouches decorate the map. This map only appeared in the 1648 and 1651 German editions of Jansson's Atlas Minor, and is therefore very rare. German text on verso.
