This is the first state of this superb Dutch Bible map covering the region between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf, featuring the Garden of Eden located near the city of Babel. The strapwork title cartouche is flanked by scenes of Eve offering Adam the apple and the expulsion from paradise. In the sea beneath Cyprus is a scene of Jonah and the whale. A lovely, decorative map. Dutch text on verso.

Laor incorrectly attributes this map to the Visscher family. Although this map was created by Danckerts, it was likely copied from Claes Janszoon Visscher's earlier map from 1642, as the two families were fierce competitors in the mid-seventeenth century, both of whom had their businesses located on the same street in Amsterdam. Danckerts' edition of this map is quite rare.
