A. Elements of Surveying, and Navigation; with a Description of the Instruments and the Necessary Tables, by Charles Davies, published 1848 (5.3 x 8.4"). This book describes the tools and procedures involved with plane-surveying and the surveying of public lands. Included are 4 plates depicting various surveying tools and 2 plates showing the "conventional signs adopted by the Topographical Beaureau, and which are now used by the United States Engineers in all their charts and maps," with the hope that these would be generally adopted by all surveyors and draftsmen in order to create uniformity among maps and charts. 188 pp. text, 100 pp. tables, 6 folding plates. Hardbound in full leather with blue leather title label and gilt titling on spine. Condition: Scattered foxing throughout. Hinges are starting and covers and spine show moderate wear and stains. (B)

B. Elementary Algebra: Embracing the First Principles of the Science, by Charles Davies, published 1850 (4.8 x 7.5"). The object of this algebra book is to "modify the system of M. Bourdon as to bring it within the scope of our common schools, by giving to it a more practical and tangible form." 279 pp. Hardbound in full leather with blue leather title label and gilt titling on spine. Condition: Light toning and soiling, minor scattered foxing, and a few small damp stains along the fore-edge of some pages. Hinges are starting and covers show very light wear. (B+)

C. University Edition. A Theoretical and Practical Treatise on Algebra..., by Horatio Nelson Robinson, published 1852 (5.3 x 8.1"). This algebra book is designed for "schools, colleges and private students" and attempts to offer both theoretical and practical approaches to algebra, a "midway" point between French and English methods of teaching (which are noted as "elaborate and diffusive" and "severe, brief, and practical," respectively). 328 pp. Hardbound in full leather with red leather title label and gilt titling on spine. Condition: Light scattered foxing, which is more pronounced in the first dozen pages. Hinges are starting, the spine is cracked at top, and the covers and spine are lightly worn. (B+)
