This lot includes three fascinating history books focused on the Civil War.

A. The River of Blood and the Valley of Death - The Lives of Robert Selden Garnett and Richard Brooke Garnett, C.S.A. - Two Cousins for the Cause, by Matthew W. Burton, published 1998 (5.6 x 8.6"). This fascinating dual biography chronicles the lives of Robert Selden Garnett and Richard Brooke Garnett, cousins of noble ancestry and generals for the Confederacy. Robert was the first general officer to be killed in the war, and Richard was court-martialed by Stonewall Jackson (although the charges were later dropped) and killed at Gettysburg. It includes 19 black and white photographs. Hardbound with gilt titles and decorations. 173 pp. and an index. Condition: Contents tight with minor soiling on the back cover. (A)

B. From Sumter to Shiloh - Battles and Leaders of the Civil War Volume I..., edited by Robert Underwood Johnson and Clarence Clough Buel, published 1956 (6.5 x 9.6"). This tremendously informative reference collects first-hand accounts from Union and Confederate leaders and various eyewitnesses chronicling major battles and campaigns in the opening years of the Civil War. Originally published by Century Magazine a couple of decades after the war's close, these accounts provided authentic and detailed information about the war, much of it from the men responsible for planning the campaigns. Battles covered in this first volume include Bull Run, Shiloh, and the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack. It features an introduction from Pulitzer Prize winning historian Roy Franklin Nichols. There are 49 maps and a number of small illustrations, all in black and white. Hardbound with an illustrated dust jacket protected by Mylar. 750 pp. Condition: Contents good with light toning along the sheets' edges and a few light stains and edge tears. Covers are moderately soiled with light shelf wear. Dust jacket has light soiling and shelf wear. (B)

C. Lee's Lieutenants - A Study in Command - Volume One Manassas to Malvern Hill, by Douglas Southall Freeman, published 1942 (6.4 x 9.4"). This rich history chronicles the Army of Northern Virginia from the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861 to the Battle of Malvern Hill a year later. Southall was one of the most important historians of his era and the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes. The book includes 29 maps and portraits of nine generals, all in black and white. Harbound in black cloth with gilt titles and an illustrated dust jacket protected by Mylar. 773 pp. Condition: Contents very good with minor toning. Covers have minor soiling and wear. Dust jacket is moderately soiled and lightly toned with edge tears and small chips. (B+)
