This interesting Japanese world map is depicted in a type of azimuthal projection with Japan at the center, causing distortion to lands depicted at the periphery. The map is surrounded by 81 flags, including that of the United States at bottom left, which is shown with 27 stars. The 27-star flag, although shown with the stars in the incorrect position, was only used for 1 year in 1845 immediately after the admittance of Florida as a state. Also shown is the Great Star flag and another flag with three stripes and 16 stars, which likely represents the flag of the Confederate States of America (which only had 13 stars). Printed on four sheets of rice paper, joined and folding in cloth-covered self-wrappers.
