A. An Atlas of Astronomy - A Series of Seventy-Two Plates, with Introduction and Index, by Sir Robert Stawell Ball, LL.D., F.R.S., published 1892 (7.4 x 8.6"). This thorough astronomical atlas includes 72 plates with explanatory text to facilitate the study of the heavens. The plates include images and charts of the planets, comets, sun spots, the phases of the moon, and numerous star maps. Some of the plates are in color lithography with tissue guards. Preface, 57 pp., 72 plates, and index. First American Edition. Hardbound in blue cloth with cover and spine decoratively stamped in silver, and all edges gilt. Condition: Plates are mostly clean and bright, with occasional light foxing. Text also has light scattered foxing. Binding is sound and covers show light wear.

B. Electro Astronomical Atlas, Designed for Schools, Academies and Ladies' Seminaries, with Explanatory Notes, Questions and Answers, by Rev. Joseph W. Spoor, A.M., published 1874 (8.6 x 10.5"). This school atlas was created for "public schools" and was intended to teach the science of both electrical and physical astronomy. The text is written in a question and answer format, as it was believed to be more suitable for "youthful comprehension." The atlas includes 21 full-page plates, 3 of which are in color lithography, a double-page diagram of the solar system, as well as numerous in-text illustrations. Condition: This example is in great condition for a school atlas, with very light toning and occasional pencil marks or soiling. The covers are lightly soiled and there are several chips along the spine.
