This book provides information on the maps which were included in the first regular atlas that ever appeared, Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. It is the standard reference for Ortelius's maps. Includes black and white images of each of the maps discussed. 8vo, hardbound in blue cloth with gilt titles on front cover and spine and an illustrated dust jacket. Condition: Contents and covers tight with negligible creasing on the edges of a few pages from thumbing. Dust jacket has very minor shelf wear. (A)
B. The History of Abraham Ortelius and His Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, by Dr. C. Koeman, published 1964 (8.8 x 11.0"). This short but informative book centers on Ortelius and his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, with a brief biography, an overview of European cartography in the 60 years preceding the publication of the atlas, a history of the first edition and its reception, and the atlas's continuing evolution through its subsequent editions. It features more than a dozen black and white illustrations. Hardbound in tan cloth with gilt insignia on the cover and gilt title on the spine. 64 pp. Condition: Contents very good with very minor foxing on the endpapers. Covers are slightly bowed with minor shelf wear. (B+)
