Superb copper engraving of the southern tip of South America with the important Straits of Magellan and Le Maire well depicted. Delicately engraved with two compass roses and a pictorial title cartouche featuring a native with a feathered headdress, surveyor tools, two galleons, and three pairs of Europeans, with two of the pairs engaged in fist and knife fights.

A dark, crisp impression on paper with the watermarks of a large fleur-de-lis coat of arms and the initials "MC." There are professional repairs to a few minor chips in the bottom corners of the sheet, well away from the image.
