This small globe is raised on its original twisted wire stand and lithographed on twelve paper gores laid over pasteboard. A large analemma is located in the South Pacific, and light blue and red lines trace isothermal lines across the globe. The globe is undated, but geography and place names suggest a circa 1900 date as Panama is still shown as part of Columbia (separated in 1903). In the last decades of the 19th Century, Chicago became the leading center for commercial cartographic publishing in the United States. Rand McNally first began business as a printer and expanded to publishing travel and railroad maps in 1872. This example is a very early globe by Rand McNally, whose first known globe was produced just a few years earlier in 1887.
