This view of the upper Mississippi River in northeastern Iowa was based on an American landscape painting by William Momberger and engraved on steel by Robert Hinshelwood. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Momberger emigrated to the United States in 1848. Having studied painting and lithography, he opened a lithography firm in New York City, moving to Indiana around 1855. He traveled around Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota drawing views, several of which were included in the portfolio Gallery of Landscape Painters--American Scenery. Published for William Pate by G. P. Putnam & Co. NY.
