This handsome two-sheet map shows Jesuit missions in central South America. The map extends from Bolivia and central Brazil in the north to the Rio de la Plata in the south, encompassing all of Paraguay, Uruguay, and part of Argentina. A large, mythical Lake Xarayes (here Schareyer See) is shown in Brazil. Small depictions of animals are scattered through the map, including a lion, an ostrich, a large reptile, and a bull. Each sheet stands on its own with a title cartouche and full borders. The maps are from Joseph Stocklein's German translation of the Lettres edifiantes et curieuses of the Jesuit missionaries.

Clean and bright examples issued folding, now flattened, on watermarked paper with just a touch of soiling. There are several minor printer's creases and extraneous creases in the southern sheet. Please note that the main image is a composite image - the map is in two separate sheets.
