A. [Facsimile] The World Encompassed and Analogous Contemporary Documents Concerning Sir Francis Drake's Circumnavigation of the World..., by Sir Francis Drake, published 1926 (7.9 x 10.5"). This handsome volume reprints the 1628 edition of the first full-length account of Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the globe written by Drake's nephew and namesake decades after the journey. It includes a comprehensive overview of Drake's life and achievements by Sir Richard Carnac Temple, British Chief Commissioner of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and a noted anthropologist and writer. There are four maps (one of which is folding) and five smaller illustrations in the text (one of them a vignette on the title page). Edited by N.M. Penzer. Number 300 of 975 copies on Japon Vellum. Uncut in original quarter-vellum and blue cloth boards with gilt figure and title on the cover and gilt title on the spine. 235 pp. (not counting the 65 pp. of Temple's appreciation). Condition: Contents lightly toned with light damp stains at the upper edge of some of the pages near the beginning and the end of the book. The binding is beginning to loosen but is still intact. B. Sir Francis Drake - A Pictorial Biography, by Hans P. Kraus, published 1970 (10.0 x 14.0"). This heavily illustrated biography of English explorer Sir Francis Drake features an introduction by Lt. Cdr. David W. Waters and Richard Boulind. It covers many of his adventures and achievements, including the early voyages, his circumnavigation of the globe, the Caribbean and Cadiz raids, his role in the fight against the Spanish Armada in 1588, and his final voyage. Among the illustrations are six foldout maps. After the biography, there is a 40 page catalogue highlighting the author's personal collection of manuscripts, printed books, maps and views, and medals and portraits. Published by N. Israel. Hardbound in blue cloth with gilt title on the spine and the emblem of the Order of the Garter in gilt on the front cover. Covers protected by a Mylar sleeve. 236 pp. Condition: Contents very good with a tiny amount of wear to the bottom corners of some of the pages in the middle. Covers near fine. (A)
