Fine plan of the city and fortification at Ambon as it appeared in 1718. The detailed plan includes an extensive key at left, and a compass rose and boats in the sea. Ambon and the surrounding Moluccan islands were the only source of nutmeg and cloves, spices which were at the time more valuable than gold. Control of the Spice Islands was fiercely contested between Dutch, Portuguese and English traders. French title in decorative cartouche with Dutch title below.
