This is the "new edition" volume five of Lenglet du Fresnoy's historical work, published by Pierre Gandouin in Paris. It contains eight folding maps, each approximately 9 x 15", and includes North America, South America, Asia, Africa and regions of Europe (Spain, Italy, Scandinavia, Poland). The emphasis on these maps is physical geography with limited political detail. The map of North America shows a peninsular California, a completely blank Northwest, and the fictitious Lake May is noted just south of the Appalachians. 539 pages with tables. Hardbound in contemporary calf with raised bands and gilt titling on spine.

The maps have crisp, dark impressions on bright sheets with faint offsetting and a few very short closed binding tears. The map of North America has a few spots of foxing. Text is very clean and tight. Externally, the spine has some minor cracking, the edges are bumped, and the covers have some light wear and minor abrasions.
