This scarce compilation features William Rogers' geological works, many of which were completed while serving as State Geologist for the first Geological Survey of Virginia from 1835-1841. The volume contains 9 folding color plates housed in pockets at the front and back of the volume. Most plates are profiles and sections, but also includes Hotchkiss' Geological Map of Virginia and West Virginia... (19.9 x 12.9"). Jedediah Hotchkiss first published this map for Virginia: A Geographical and Political Summary... in 1876, and he would continue to publish iterations of the map over the next 10 years, but the geology was all based upon Roger's work from the 1830s. Cartographically, the map is color-coded to show 11 different geological types across the two states, and red lines indicate geologic cross sections. In addition to the geology, the map shows railroads, canals, and county seats.

832 pages, 9 plates, and an additional 7 plates in the text, mostly of fossils. A small printed slip "Compliments of Mrs. Rogers" is laid loose between the title page and a front endpaper. Hardbound in dark brown cloth with gilt title on spine.

References: cf. Marcou & Marcou #611.

Condition: B+

The folding plates are very good to near fine with a hint of toning. The geological map has some light color offsetting. Text is clean, tight, and near fine. Covers and spine have only minor wear with the corners of the front board expertly reinstated.
