A. Regiones Ventorum et Nomina, by Hondius/Bertius, published in Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum, circa 1618 (3.6 x 3.6"). This is an elaborate 32-point wind rose, or compass rose. North is denoted with a fleur-de-lis, and east and south are illustrated with a lion and a sea monster. The first 19 winds are listed on verso in Greek, Latin, and Dutch. Reference: King (2nd ed.) pp. 96-99. Condition: Light toning. (B+)
B. Fig. 64, by Alain Manesson Mallet, published in Beschreibung des Ganzen Welt-Kreisses, circa 1684 (3.9 x 5.6"). At the center of this wind rose are a trio of merfolk surrounding a shield with a ship etched into it. Wind heads blow gusts within the points of the compass, and a fleur-de-lis is directed north. Reference: Pastoureau, MANESSON-MALLET 1 B. Condition: A nice impression on watermarked paper with minor marginal soiling. (A)
