This fine reproduction of the Sebastian Munster's edition of Ptolemy's Geographia (originally published in 1540) is from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Series of Atlases in Facsimile Third Series - Volume V. Edited by Munster and published by Heinrich Petri, this edition contained 48 maps, including 20 that Munster specifically prepared for this work. Munster probably had more influence in spreading geographical knowledge throughout Europe in the mid-sixteenth century than any of his contemporaries. The text is in Latin and is framed by ornamental borders credited to Hans Holbein the Younger, the renowned artist and printmaker. It features a 17 page bibliographical note by R.A. Skelton that provides invaluable context and some additional black & white illustrations. Hardbound in green cloth with gilt insignia on front cover and title on spine, with a green and black dust jacket. 444 pages.
